Going Google for Math Workshop Online Course
Challenge
Person/Problem Worksheet
Who is the person? A math teacher in grades 3-6 using Google Apps in a 1:1 setting
What is the problem? They need to be using technology for math, but are overwhelmed by what to use, how to use it in an effective way and lack the training resources needed to learn the tools
What is the common advice? Search YouTube, join Facebook groups, Google it, buy stuff on Teachers Pay Teachers, ask a coworker, go to another long professional development training, a million different apps and/or sites to try
What’s wrong with this advice? They don’t have time to scour the Internet for tutorials or try to learn a million different apps or teach their kids how to log in and use all these different apps. Buying resources is great, but it takes time to find them and sometimes they aren’t what you need or want, and you already have great ideas of your own and resources from previous school years
Solution
What makes your solution different? My solution follows a research-based framework using 2 simple tools that you already have: Google Classroom and Google Slides. Following a consistent and predictable framework allows teachers, kids, and parents to focus on the content and not on the tool. Not only will you learn how to use the tools, but you’ll be able to use them to design and create lessons for your classroom.
What objections they might raise when you present the solution? I don’t have time to learn something new. I’m not very tech savvy. I think kids need paper & pencil. I’ve tried math workshop in the past and it didn’t work. I don’t know how to use Google apps.
What might keep them stuck? They may get stuck on the tech components
Origin story/how it’s different: using this system I was able to easily transition my kids to virtual learning in the spring without having to spend hours recreating activities. I was able to easily adapt what I had and make it fit in the format my kids were used to
